Rocket Festival
During the second weekend of May in the Northeastern province of Yasothon is the noisy and attractive happening of the Yasothon Rocket Festival. The festival is associated with an ancient belief in a god of rain who loved to be worshipped with fire and by this the god will bless the people give rain for the newly planted rice crops.
Rockets, platforms and other decorations are prepared weeks before the happening. An average length of a rocket is 9 metres /27 feet/ and can contain up to 30 kilograms /60 pounds/ of gunpowder. On the day of the festival rockets /or “bang fai”/ are presented and after that launched one after another. The rocket that reaches the highest altitude is the winner. Another contests like “Biggest Rocket” or “Most Beautiful Rocket” are also attractive. If you visit the Rocket Festival in Thailand a blast is guaranteed.
