Boat Racing

Boat Racing is also traditional Thai sport. The biggest event happens during the rainy season in the end of October and beginning of November when water level is highest. Usually the competitors are people living nearby a river. Boat Racing has it roots about 600 years ago. It firstly started as a preparation for oarsmen in order to be fit for the invading army. Nowadays Thai Boat Racing is considered as a national sport.

Thai Boat Races are held in the provinces where there are major waterways like Angthong, Ayutthaya, Nan, Pathum Thani, Surat Thani and others. Boats are made of tree trunks and brightly decorated. Some of the boats can accommodate up to 60 oarsmen. As usual in the end of the races different prizes and trophies are given to the winners.
