Kite Flying
Kite Flying again is a traditional ancient Thai sport. Some sources claim that Kite Flying has its origins in China at least 3,000 years ago. It can be practiced by everybody – from average people to kings. The only requirement is open area and wind. Some people say that Kite Flying is the national pastime. You can see kites with many different shapes, forms, sizes and colours. Also some kites emulate flying insects, birds, and other beasts.
The materials used for preparing a kite are light and strong like bamboo or rattan for the frame and silk or paper for the body. Some kites can reach length of 50 feet and require a team of up to 20 people to operate the kite. The best time of year for flying a kite is during March through May when the Southwest monsoon blows from the Gulf of Thailand.
